Callomania (n.)
I'm starting off with an easy one. Y0u will be permanently banned from this blog if you look up the word on google. Not really (I'm not that strict, I don't know how to do that, and we appreciate all our readers), but come on people; play fair. Furthermore, if you own a copy of "Mrs. Byrne's. . ." please refrain from entering into the fray. Otherwise, dig in!

The land of the cell phone and land line alike. No roaming, no long distance, roll over minutes, crystal clear voice quality, free nights and weekends, and no dropped calls. What more could the call-o-phile wish for?
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought it was love of deep fried squid, but calamari is spelled all crazy.
ReplyDeleteSo, I am going to go with a passion for the Southern Baptist phone tree, useful for getting the word out concerning wayward children and potluck dinners.

Oh, and if someone googles it and they pick the first result you will know... oh, you will know.

With the proper method of breaking a word down into its constituent parts, deciphering even Mrs. Byrne's vocabulary becomes as easy as falling off a bike.
ReplyDeleteCallomania. Let's see. The first part of the word, "cal," is a bit tricky, since this abbreviation can refer to California, the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water from 14.5 degrees C to 15.5 degrees C, or things you read off the backs of cereal boxes. We'll go with California since it's the shortest. "Lo" is much easier, since it is obviously a corruption of the word "low," which is the sound uttered by cattle. "Man" probably refers to all mankind. Lastly "Ia," as everyone knows, is the name of a Persian martyr of the 4th century. Therefore, Callomania simply means "Californian cattle call of mankind to martyrdom." Wow.. these *are* obscure words.
Bravo Erin! Your philological skills are prodigious.
ReplyDeleteErin, that made me laugh out loud. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteI hate to cut this guessing game short. Since I've made another word of the day, however, I feel compelled. From now on, I'll be posting answers to the word of the day on the ones coming after it. But for now, I shall announce what the real definition is. You were very close Erin.
ReplyDeleteCallomania (n.)- the delusion that one is beautiful.
Okay, maybe not. But you get the award for being really, really, laugh out loud funny.
